A series sweep, a well-pitched Jeff Suppan start and the Brewers' 21st consecutive home victory against the Pirates. It was a day of unlikely events.

Jeff Suppan probably saved the lives of countless Jeff Suppan bobbleheads by putting in one of his best outings of the season today. Suppan allowed eleven baserunners in six innings and had the bases loaded in the second and fourth innings, but allowed just one earned run, a solo shot by Garrett Jones.

Casey McGehee supplied the first Brewer run with his 11th home run, then a Jeff Suppan bases loaded walk and a two run single by Craig Counsell supplied the remaining offense. Felipe Lopez went 0-for-4 and is now 2-for-19 since leaving Tuesday's game with a tweaked tendon in his foot.

Hardy’s callup to Brewers bittersweet

Shortstop J.J. Hardy will be among the Brewers' limited callups when active rosters expand to 40 on Tuesday, but the promotion comes two costly days late.

McClung, Colome take it to mound

Brewers relievers Seth McClung and Jesus Colome finished mound sessions on Sunday feeling confident about pitching before the 2009 season is over.

Complete Coverage >

In a classic case of the irresistible force meeting the immovable object, the Brewers take their 20 game home winning streak against the Pirates into a game where they'll send Jeff Suppan, 0-6 with a 6.70 ERA in his last nine starts, to the mound. Also, it's Jeff Suppan Bobblehead day.

Follow the jump for today's pitching matchup, lineup and conversation on today's game!

Ross Ohlendorf (11-8, 4.10) has beaten the Brewers twice already this season, posting a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings of work. He's 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA in August, and has picked up a quality start in each of his four appearances. He doesn't get a ton of strikeouts (just 5.1 per 9), but he's posted a respectable 1.306 WHIP. He is seventh in the NL with 22 home runs allowed, but his .7 home runs allowed per nine innings would easily be the lowest rate in the Brewer rotation.

He'll face off against Jeff Suppan (5-8, 5.38). As mentioned above, Suppan is 0-6 in his last nine starts, and hasn't won since June 17, with the Brewers going just 1-8 in his starts over that time. He allowed 14 baserunners and four earned runs in 4.1 innings last time out, and his 1.753 WHIP is the third highest ever by a Brewer with 100 or more innings pitched. He's 1-0 against the Pirates this season in two starts, but has posted an 8.00 ERA in those appearances.Hopefully Suppan's bobblehead comes with a replaceable head.

Pirates Hope To Solve Milwaukee Woes

Right-hander Ross Ohlendorf can extend a positive streak and halt a negative one for the Pittsburgh Pirates today, when they enter Miller Park for the third and final test of a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Kirbir’s Pictures of the Week

For the last two weeks now, the Brewers have lost their weekday games, only to win Friday and Saturday. It was a nice change to see Brauny and Fielder fail to perform last night only to have their slack picked up by the rest of the team. Craig Counsell even said so last night. As an odd aside, did anyone else know Craiggers had an IMDB page?

Also in the exciting news category, Dave Bush is back!

Follow the jump for actual pictures and more discussion on the starter we missed...

Dave Bush's new song could be ACDC's "Back in Black." He returned to the majors Thursday, throwing 92 pitches. Unfortunately, his ERA rose to 5.88 as he couldn't quite make it through the fifth.

Bourgeois_first_hr_medium
On Friday night, Jason Bourgeois hit his first home run since being called up to the majors to help the Brewers win by two runs.

Cam_flies_medium
Nope, this isn't an optical illusion folks. Mike Cameron is really flying lately, hitting .300 with ten extra base hits since August 8th! Wowee!

Stop_punchin_time_medium
And, of course, here's the obligatory Prince Fielder/Ryan Braun congratulatory punch-fest shot. Of course, this isn't from last night when the dynamic duo was 0-5.

Here's a fun thought: six out of our next nine games are against the St Louis Cardinals and one Albert Pujols. This could get interesting. I plan on untucking maliciously when possible.

Brewers Continue Winning Ways Over Pirates At Home

Jody Gerut's pinch-hit RBI double in the sixth put the Brewers ahead for good and Craig Counsell went 3-for-4 with a triple and scored, as Milwaukee crushed Pittsburgh, 7-3.
