Melvin to Yost: One final humiliation

ESPN’s BottomLine just ran this bit of MLB news:

Brewers GM Doug Melvin sends e-mail to fired manager Ned Yost to show appreciation for getting Brewers “in position” to make playoffs

Don’t get me wrong; I appreciated every bit of that item. I just wonder about the rationale of the BottomLine editor for thinking that was newsworthy.

Is that relevant to the national audience? Keeping Ned’s name in the news as he shops for other jobs? Or is it for the same reason I would’ve run it: to say, “Can you believe this damn guy? Fires his manager, rubs it in, then tells the media about it?”

Bravo, Melvin. And good call, ESPN.

You only celebrate once, Brewers

And you’ve chosen to go crazy about simply qualifying. Fair enough: It’s your first time. Maybe next year you win a series.

Prince Fielder Champagne Celebration

When it comes right down to it, Prince Fielder is nothing more than a left-handed version of his father.

Sveum old, Sveum old for the final 12 games

I thought we were over the ideas of loyalty to veterans and giving up outs. Now, before Dale Sveum has even managed his first Brewer game, Tom Haudricourt packs one paragraph with several of the worst ideas of the season.

… Mike Cameron [is] leading off. Sveum just said he wanted some experience in the top spot, so he was willing to ignore Cameron’s high strikeout rate and low on-base percentage. He told the team in a meeting a little while ago that they would be doing more bunting and hit-and-running — “small ball,” if you will — so he probably wants Cameron’s speed up there, assuming he gets on base.

He “was willing to ignore Cameron’s high strikeout rate and low on-base percentage.” I am certain that Sveum did not say exactly that and Haudricourt was just reminding us about the implications of what he was paraphrasing.

But.

You know who really got fired today?

Chino Cadahia.

On the day Ned Yost loses his job with the Brewers and with just one year remaining of Bobby Cox in Atlanta, I would not want to be the present Braves bench coach. Because sir, you will be replaced by Ned before the end of October.

Sleep well, Chino.

You’re a HOFer. You don’t have to do this

I can’t believe Robin Yount works for Dale Sveum.

Google Suggest doesn’t lie

If the searchers of the world say Ned Yost sucks, then he must.

Ned Yost fired

According to the Associated Press, Doug Melvin finally pulled the trigger and fired Ned Yost.

The move comes after the horrid four-game sweep in Philadelphia, in which the Brewers’ lead in the wild card was reduced to zero.

Third base coach Dale Sveum, not bench coach Ted Simmons, will take over for the remainder of the year. In fact, Simmons has been “reassigned to an advisory role.”
